“Chillwave” is a tag that’s applied quite generously nowadays, to acts with styles ranging from sonic energy of Toro y Moi and Neon Indian, to the more introspective leanings of Phantogram.  Washed Out, the stage name of electronic landscaper Ernest Greene, veers more towards the atmospheric layering and shoe-gaze of a modern day Depeche Mode.  His debut album, Within and Without, was released this summer to much critical acclaim, and it is sure to make many of critics’ Best of 2011 lists.  Yet another hit for Sub Pop Records, it ensures that kids throughout the country will continue to make weird music on their laptops for the time being (always a good thing in my book).
