I discovered Elliott Smith because a friend reccommended it – neither of us had really listening to his stuff before and then she borrowed a CD and was suddenly singing his praises so I thought I’d look into it too!
Elliott Smith is an American singer-songwriter, 1969-2003. There’s a lot of information about his musical upbringing on the internet, and I’m sure you can all use viable (and perhaps non-privacy invading?) search engines yourself to find this stuff out!
This album is the epitome of Smith – gentle vocals, lilting guitar melodies, subtley changing rhythms and story-telling lyrics. The influences he cites – flamenco, country, dixieland, punk etc are all here, even if just slightly.
I think what makes Smith so lovely to listen to is that all his songs are so obviously him, yet each different. Some artists’ albums sound the same the whole way through after you’ve listened a few times…. Smith’s music always stands on it’s own and holds it’s own!
Worth a listen, if you’ve not heard him before. Spotify has some good top choices and Smith has loads of albums so there’s a bountiful supply of his music for those who want to look!
