At the height of his fame in the late 1960s and early 70s, Peter Sarstedt was a well known name in the United Kingdom and his native India.  An accomplished studio musician in his earlier days, he had played guitar and bass in his brother Eden Kane’s band, but it was this single that catapulted him to stardom.  While he was hardly a one-hit wonder (his song “Frozen Orange Juice” charted at #10 in the UK, also in 1969), he is only really remembered for this, his biggest hit.

Interest in his music was briefly revived when director Wes Anderson used this song on the soundtrack to the short film Hotel Chevalier, which serves as a prelude of sorts to The Darjeeling Limited, released in 2007.  The movie’s soundtrack consists mainly of Anglo-Indian or Indian musicians, and features tracks by Sarstedt, Satyajit Ray, The Kinks, The Rolling Stones and Joe Dassin – full of quirk and verve, like Wes Anderson’s films themselves.  Where Do You Go really is a beautiful song, and I hope you like it as much as I do.
