AGIHK discovered Dilan Walpola – who produces pieces that are sculptures, jewelry and art. He is the son of two artists: his mother’s a painter, and his father a graphic designer. Born and raised in Texas. So he toldAGIHK: “From the time I was a small child I was encouraged to paint and draw, attended an art-based high school, and then moved to New York City to attend the Copper Union for Architecture. In January 2010 I was kicked out of of the Cooper Union and was homeless for 8 months. Then things started falling together and now I’m here”. Seems interesting enough to read the full interview?

HOW DID YOU BECOME A JEWELRY DESIGNER?

Honestly, I started making jewelry as an experiment to stabilize my life creatively and financially during a time when I was homeless in New York City. But I always had a fascination with jewelry and this point in my life gave me the excuse to do so.

PICK A PIECE AND TELL ITS STORY TO AGIHK:

Single earring necklace – Having studied architecture at the Cooper Union, I was inspired by the catenary curve. The catenary is the curve that an idealized hanging chain or cable assumes when supported at its ends and acted on only by its own weight. The idea of a chain that is formed by no living thing and only the presence of gravity were the first steps in creating the single earring necklace.

WHERE DO YOU GET YOUR INSPIRATIONS FROM?

This collection was inspired by the natural world and the attempt to bridge jewelry and art.
