Agirlinhongkong went crazy for theoliveshoppe.com and interviewed its founder. An online concept store that makes you want to dress up like… like… Hard to find the adjective. Like nobody else for sure, and I WANT the scary ring. Besides contemporary art and conceptual design, we can’t go around naked anyway.

Tell us how it all began…

TheOliveShoppe: I started in college selling vintage clothing on eBay as a hobby and after graduation I still wanted to sell clothes but I also wanted to travel so I guess the Olive Shoppe online store is a way to combine the two.  So my boyfriend and I left California and left for Asia.  Since being here,  it’s been really refreshing to meet local designers who sometimes don’t have the opportunity to participate in global tradeshows or be represented by well-known showrooms.

And what job would you be doing if not this one?

TheOliveShoppe: An archaeologist or food critic.

How do you choose the brand you wish to feature on your site?

TheOliveShoppe: I choose brands with a design aesthetic that I strongly admire and would wear myself.  I like labels with their own distinct vision and a bit unconventional in the terms that it doesn’t necessarily have to be very popular with the mainstream or with what’s trendy at the moment.

Which is your favourite city in the world? And where would you like to live if you could be anywhere?

TheOliveShoppe: That’s hard to say since there’s so many places around the world I still want to visit.  For the cities I’ve been to so far, I really love Berlin and NYC; two cities with very different vibes but I love them both for their architecture and creative energy.  Tokyo is my favorite city for street style fashion.  Growing up in the suburbs in America all you really get is giant chain stores and drab shopping malls so preferably I want to end up in a city where life does not revolve around malls, but rather a place with history and interesting architecture, and inspires you to go out and explore its every nook and cranny.

I know you live and you work in Bangkok, as you know agirlinhongkong likes asking questions about cities, so could you tell us your favourite Restaurant and Shop in Bagkok:

TheOliveShoppe: Favourite Restaurant : http://www.hydeandseek.com/ (It’s been calledIt’s been called Thailand’s first London-meets-New-York-meets-Asia gastro bar, ndr.) Great outdoor atmosphere in a garden setting and the food’s delicious too.

TheOliveShoppe: Favourite shop: http://www.wwa.co.th/ My friend Wan’s store, WWA.  Their store is like a big airy loft with tons of natural lighting and exposed pipes and brick, quite unlike other stores in Bangkok.  Besides browsing the selection of avant-garde style clothing that they design in-house, it’s also a nice place to hang-out because they have these big comfy lounge chairs everywhere so you can just pop in for a chat anytime.
