‘Sounds like it was recorded in a massive underwater cathedral’ was the snide yet giggle-inducing review of Lana Del Rey’s album by the Los Angeles Times. Although Bedouin Soundclash’s ‘Hearts in the Night’ vinyl-esque and kilometers-away sound doesn’t exactly fully surface into complete clarity either – there is one striking but dramatic difference. While the little mermaid of gospel that is Miss Del Ray pushes me further to the bounds of atheism as she waddles in ankle-deep lyrical shallows, the latter is both charming and animated, the depth reaching heart level. Reminiscent of the Byrds on account of both sound and lyrics, it’s definitely worth holding your breath for 3:04 minutes and letting your ears do the breathing.
