Originally an actress, Marketa Irglova has successfully turned her hand to music. Not, however, without a stunning start in the film industry – the Czech was the youngest person (at 19) to win an Oscar’s music category as well as being the first Czech woman to win an Oscar. With this impressive resume, she has turned to music, and since 2006 has been producing songs with beautiful style (solo and otherwise).
This artist is the epitome of beautiful harmonies with underlying piano melodies. The fashionable folk-style of music that is sweeping the world currently is continued with this artist, and she pulls it off well. Like her contemporaries, the story-telling element is well relayed and with every song a picture unfolds over the gentle music. The link above allows you to download a recording of a live San Francisco gig – just from this you can tell that she is popular within her fan base. Even the songs in her native Czech prove to be melodic enough and hold their own, even with a non-Czech speaker. The download is from her solo debut – Anar (2011); previously she played with the band the Swell Season. Worth checking out if you like artists like Jennifer O’Connor and Charlene Soraia.
