Genre: punk, post-hardcore
The Bronx are a band I respect, especially as musicians. From LA as of 2002, they have released three albums under this pseudonym. However, the reason I respect them so much is their other name – Mariachi El Bronx. Mariachi El Bronx is actually the band I heard first – it is the same band, but playing mariachi-style music. This swing of styles shows off the true musicianship of this band, and is definitely what makes them. The idea apparently came about when The Bronx were asked to play an acoustic gig. Not wanting to do the standard, they decided to change the genre (quite drastically), in favour of mariachi. Then on tour, the band pursued this and continued to write mariachi-style music, and here they are – with a further two albums, under mariachi influence.
This jumpy, high energy, purely grunge-y album is so good it makes my teeth hurt. I listen to this (in my rather modestly sized student room) and it makes me want to leap around like a maniac on…. White Drugs. The heavy drums and scratchy guitars simply make this; it’s an album that reminds me of times gone by.
The almost-screamo vocals fit the energy perfectly and the band nails the set-up of the overall sound, with a mix of this and slightly-less-jumpy-but-still-more-jumpy-than-anyone-else songs.
