Canada can claim home for yet another great band, Great Lake Swimmers. If you haven’t heard of them before, they have actually been around for about a decade- and making a splash (pardon the pun) all the while! The critically-acclaimed album that this song came from, Lost Channels, was Polaris Music Prize shortlisted and JUNO nominated in 2009. The critics haven’t been the only ones to love them, so have people such as Feist, Robert Plant, NBC Nightly News anchor Brian Williams and cyclist Lance Armstrong. They have also graced the CBC Radio 3 and the iTunes Singer/Songwriter Chart. “In the U.S., Lost Channels debuted at #10 on the Billboard Heatseekers Chart and was a favorite among influential bloggers and NPR staff,” their website boasts.
But why should you listen to them, you may wonder? What will make you listen to them and decide they are a band you’d want to hear again? Well, their lyrics, for one. As is evident in this track, Pulling On A Line, their lyrics are catchy and amusing in a way that doesn’t place them outside of their genre. Also, lead singer and lyricist Tony Dekker has a sound that you won’t find anywhere else.
If you enjoy this song, you should check out their new album New Wild Everywhere, which is filled with similarly breathy and beautiful songs.
Much love, folks,
Chelsea
