Regina Spektor: pianist, composer and singer. Russian with Jewish roots and north-american nationality. Her influences go from Radiohead and The Beatles to Tom Waits. She studied piano in the Manhattan School of Music and the Purchase College where she was graduated with honors. She was always very interested in the classical music and her parents were a big influence because they are both musicians. After her graduation she started to plunge herself into new styles of music like pop, jazz or punk.
Her eclectic style made her explore into new ways of singing like beat-box or glottal stop and in her way of writing and playing. Her musical education is brilliant. She has the precise technique and besides she has the curiosity of discovering new musical streams. So this two things turn Regina into a great and complete musician.
Her first album was released in 2000 and since that she has participated in numerous festivals and concerts in mythical places like Royal Albert Hall. This year she has launched a new album called “What we saw from the Cheap Seats”.
I think there is no need for more words because I am not able to summarize Regina’s style or music into one word. But I will say that is unique and touching. I leave a here a single from her album “Sovietic Kitsch” (2006).
Judge for yourself and enjoy the tune.
